KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF E-COMMERCE AND CHALLENGES OF ITS DEVELOPMENT IN UKRAINE

Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the key characteristics of e-commerce as one of the leading forms of entrepreneurial activity in the context of the digital transformation of the economy. It examines the essence of e-commerce as an effective tool for optimizing business processes, enhancing the quality and speed of communication with consumers, and expanding market opportunities through the use of modern Internet technologies, digital platforms, mobile applications, and payment systems. The main models of electronic interaction among market participants (B2B, B2C, C2C, G2C) are identified and analyzed, reflecting the multi-level structure of the digital environment and providing flexibility and diversity in conducting business in the digital space. The study provides a detailed analysis of the key factors influencing the development of e-commerce in Ukraine, including the state of technical infrastructure, legal regulation of the sector, the population’s level of digital literacy, the quality and security of electronic payment systems, consumer trust in online platforms, and the efficiency of logistical support. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the war on the functioning of e-commerce, manifested in changes in consumer priorities, business relocation to safer regions, and the emergence of new delivery formats and digital services. It is highlighted that, under conditions of a wartime economy, e-commerce performs not only a commercial function but also an important social role-providing the population with access to essential goods, supporting employment, and sustaining small and medium-sized enterprises. Key directions of state support for digital trade are identified, including the development of technical infrastructure, implementation of educational programs to enhance digital competencies, and improvement of the legislative framework. The necessity of integrating e-commerce into the system of strategic recovery and sustainable economic development in Ukraine amid contemporary challenges is emphasized. The conclusions underscore the prospects for the development of e-commerce as a catalyst for economic growth and its potential to ensure the resilience of the Ukrainian economy under conditions of instability.
