EFFECT OF MODIFIED FRESNEL PRISMS ON VISUAL ACUITY AND CONTRAST SENSITIVITY IN CHILDREN

Abstract

Prisms are used in ophthalmology for the treatment of strabismus and binocular vision disorders. Abroad soft membrane Fresnel prism “Press-OnTM Prism” is widespread in practice of foreign colleagues. In Ukraine since 2006 Fresnel microprisms were modifi ed as a set of KK-42, which was successfully implemented in ophthalmic practice. For several years, we studied its infl uence upon visual acuity, binocular function and contrast sensitivity.Objective. To determine the modifi ed Fresnel microprisms infl uence upon visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in children.Materials and methods. The study involved 30 children (60 eyes) (12 boys and 18 girls) in the ages of 6 to 18 years (mean age – 12 years). Before examination for each child it was fulfi lled refractometry, visual acuity determination by Landolt rings. In all the children it was determined a low degree of hypermetropia and visual acuity was 1.0. For the test there were selected 8 prism compensators par value Δ5; Δ10; Δ14; Δ18; Δ20; Δ24; Δ28;Δ30 from the set of KK-42.After visometry, in front of each eye on the trial spectacle frame it was installed modifi ed Fresnel prism, outwards based, starting from the prism 5PD force with a gradual increase to 30PD. The severity of the patient condition was estimated for each prism. After determining the degree of changing of visual acuity with prism compensator, from the distance of 3 metres with the same set of modifi ed Fresnel prisms it was studied contrast sensitivity of the eye with the help of Lea-numbers test.Conclusions. According to the results of the work it can be said that the modifi ed Fresnel prism infl uence on visual acuity and contrast sensitivity is understated. The degree of reduction of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity depends on the strength of microprisms – then more power of Prism – the lower visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
