Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of Taras Shevchenko’s artistic legacy, particularly his sketch «Crucifixion» (1850). Through the analysis of its artistic features, the conceptual accents are revealed, which were purposefully placed by the author. It is stated in the article that Shevchenko endued the central figure of the crucified person with his self-portrait traits. This aspect has never been studied in art criticism independently. The objective of the article is an attempt to prove that such “self-depiction” fitted with the artist’s character and his artistic intentions, despite the stereotypes about Shevchenko.
