DESTRUCTIVE IMPACT OF TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY OF THE STUDENT'S PERSONALITY

DESTRUCTIVE IMPACT OF TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY OF THE STUDENT'S PERSONALITY

Abstract

Introduction. In the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as the increasing number and scale of man-made and natural disasters, the issue of psychological security is becoming an important topic for research and discussion. It is known that adverse environmental factors, extreme situations and situations of uncertainty, excessive and prolonged stress endanger both physical and mental health. This can lead to traumatic experiences that often have long-term consequences. The purpose is presentation and discussion of the results of the study of the impact of traumatic experiences on the psychological safety of university students.. Methods - expert survey, testing, methods of mathematical statistics. Originality. Intense stressors, such as hostilities, can significantly compromise a person's psychological safety. For example, the most traumatic events for those studying in a region where hostilities are taking place are those related to the experience of being in a war zone and the death of a loved one. The traumatic experiences of these students are more often characterised by symptoms such as constant avoidance of stimuli related to the trauma (criterion C), increasing agitation (criterion D) and repeated re-enactment of the traumatic event (criterion B). A comparative analysis of reactions to traumatic events between young women and young men indicates more pronounced symptoms of traumatic experiences in young women. Girls are more vulnerable to the negative effects of stress. There are inverse two-way correlations in the group of young women and the group of young men, which indicates a significant negative impact of traumatic experiences on the psychological security of students. Traumatic experiences of young women and the observed dysfunction of important aspects of life (criterion F) reduce the effect of such a mechanism of psychological security as coping strategies. The psychological safety of young men is most affected by recurrent memories of trauma (criterion B), constant and growing arousal (criterion D) and immediate reaction to a traumatic event (criterion A). The listed symptoms of PTSD in young men reduce moral and volitional regulation, disrupt stress coping skills, provoke a decrease in the meaningfulness of life, impede post-traumatic growth, and generally undermine the psychological safety of the individual. Conclusion. The results of the empirical study confirmed the hypothesis that traumatic experiences affect all components of students' psychological safety (moral and volitional regulation (normativity), strategies for overcoming stressful situations, value and meaning factor, and post-traumatic growth). Continuing in-depth research in this area will help to develop effective methods of assistance and support for students in conditions of increased stress and traumatic situations.
