REGION – HOLISTIC NATURAL-SOCIAL-ECONOMICAL SYSTEM

REGION – HOLISTIC NATURAL-SOCIAL-ECONOMICAL SYSTEM

Abstract

Purpose. Formation and socio-economic development of the region, as an independent administrative-territorial unit, requires the consideration of approaches to the definition of term «region» because, among scientists there is still no consensus on the interpretation of this term. The purpose of the article is characteristic of the existing approaches to the definition of «region», their classification, as well as justification of optimal approach to the definition of «region» in the current socio-economic conditions.Data & Methods. Publication of home and foreign scientists in the field of social geography and regional economy, including articles in national and foreign scientific jour nals, monographs and academic publications, regulatory legal acts are used for writing this article. For the analysis of the materials are used general scientific research methods – comparison, description, analysis, synthesis, generalization, induction and deduction, the system approach.Results. Different approaches to the definition of term «region» in social geography and regional economy were considered in the article. Analyzing approaches and corresponding to them definitions of «region», can be seen that the main drawback of most of them is that each approach defines this term from only one point of view. Simultaneous research of the term «region» from perspective of several approaches involves great methodological difficulties and possible errors. One of the conditions of strategic development of the society is to preserve the natural environment as a sphere of human activity, regeneration of resources needed to meet the material and spiritual needs of man. Therefore, the most complex and perspective approach to the definition of «region» is the system approach and presentation of region as the holistic natural-socio-economic system.
