Abstract

The primary objective of foreign language education is development of the communicative competence, which encompasses the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for effective intercultural communication. In this context, sociocultural competence has become increasingly significant, as it facilitates overcoming cultural barriers and fosters tolerance. The relevance of this study stems from the need to develop students’ sociocultural competence in alignment with the Federal State Educational Standards for General Secondary Education, amidst the challenges of globalization and societal digitalization. In the theoretical chapter, the dissertation systematizes approaches to the formation of sociocultural competence, analyzes its structural components, examines the psychological and pedagogical characteristics of secondary school students, and justifies the principles for selecting video materials for integration into the educational process. In the practical chapter, a system of tasks is presented in the form of a communicative-oriented practicum, comprising 6 lessons based on 8 video materials aimed at developing sociocultural competence. The system’s implementation, conducted during the 2024/2025 academic year at Municipal Autonomous General Secondary Education School No. 1 in Yekaterinburg with 31 ninth-grade students, confirmed its effectiveness, demonstrating increased motivation and improved performance in the experimental group. The developed task system promotes the formation of intercultural skills, tolerance, and communicative competence, offering educators a practical tool for implementing modern educational standards.
