Abstract

The article attempts to develop a new conceptual and defi nitional approach to outsider art. This approach is based on the ideas introduced by Gilles Deleuze in his aesthetic writings. Nowadays outsider and naïve art studies are in need of new concepts and methods, given that other known approaches such as semiotics and comparative study do not prove effective in this case. The author develops the Deleuzian theory of subjectivity, according to which the notion of a subject is replaced by the dynamic subjectivity. Within this approach, it is possible to analyze the images in outsider art as the acts of “becoming” and shift focus from the object of art to functioning of the image as a process. The article also widens the notion of a sign and hence makes an attempt to reverse the opposition between the author and his/her creation: the personal story of an artist becomes a part of an art imagery while the act of creation of meaning is relocated outside the artistic dimension of the work of art.
