Abstract

The article is devoted to a relatively little developed in the domestic economic literature topic, especially as regards its regional aspect. It is asserted that the market of non-food products in any country is designed to meet the needs of individuals and legal entities in a huge range of relevant products. It is stated that the demand of individuals is satisfied mainly by retail, and legal - by the wholesale market of non-food products. It is declared that the peculiarity peculiar to the retail market of non-food products in the USSR was its smaller share in comparison with the food markets. It is noted that the frequent absence of necessary consumer goods in stores was common for the population of the Middle Urals and most other re gions. It is proved that the economic crisis of the late 1980s in the USSR was in fact an aggravation of the previous long-term stagnation of the Soviet economy. The conclusion is drawn that the low level of the provision of the population with consumer goods by then did not withstand any criticism and combined with a similar (if not even more severe) situation in the food market threatened the most serious socio-political consequences.
