New technology is changing current methods used in film restoration and such changes are destined to become more prevalent in the future. The first part of this paper begins by reviewing the possibilities afforded by this technology which range from the digital production of restored films for projection in our cinemas to the application of data bases and computer networks such as Internet. We examine both currently available methods as well as thosewhich might become available in the future thanks to advances made in this field. We also discuss the ethical issues which arise from such practices and the controls to which they should be submitted. In the second part of the paper a proposal is made as to how these new systems and computer support technology might be used in studying the heritage of the cinema. The proposal, still in the process of being developed, seeks to use digitaltechnology in bringing together in the same medium the research and the object under research.
