Dagherrotipi, ambrotipi, ferrotipi: 1842-1870. La collezione dello CSAC.

Abstract

Starting point of my research is the cataloguing and the dating of the CSAC collection of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. The collection includes 244 daguerreotypes, 21 ambrotypes, 10 tintypes and the “Fondo Laterza” formed by more than 100 pieces. The cataloguing has shown as in Europe the use of the daguerreotypes declined at the end of the fifties but in the USA it went on until the seventies. The plates are almost anonymous and, except some of them, portrait single people or groups. An interesting exception is the presence of a daguerreotype by Brady or by his studio. My research focuses not only on the analysis of the techniques used for the daguerreotypes, the ambrotypes and the tintypes, but also on an accurate study of the cases which make precious every single photograph. The final aim is to point out the symbolic meaning of the portrayed subjects and the models to which they refer to more than to identify the artists. At the end it is obvious how the portraits, even if strictly related with the American painting of the XIX century , become an autonomous form of art with its own tradition. The analysis and reading of the CSAC collection is a journey to the history of the American photograph from 1842 to 1870 and it becomes the starting point and the stimulus for new studies.
