Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore strategies and methods the educators, at adapted primary school extracurricular activities, apply in their work This to support the students' basic skills and needs through the curriculum's goals and central content. The study's theoretical starting points are based on Lev Vygotsky's theory of the proximal development zone and social didactics. The theory highlights the importance of the interaction between students and educators in order to promote the students' social and cognitive development. The socio-cultural approach is the basis of the study to find out how these educational strategies and methods work. This is to create an inclusive and beneficial learning environment for all students with functional variations. The study has been based on semi-structured interview questions with four leisure pedagogues, a special pedagogue and a counselor. The study draws attention to the importance of individual adaptation and flexibility in teaching in the after-school center, which can contribute to the students' social and cognitive development. The results show that the application of communicative aids such as TAKK and picture support is leading in order to make students with functional variations feel included and involved in teaching in the after-school centre. The study also underlines the lack of assets such as resources and competence development for the after-school teachers to be able to meet and handle the difficulties that may arise and also meet the students' needs. The study's contribution should contribute to increased understanding of the pedagogues' way of working in the after-school center with a focus on students with functional variations.
