Writing allows children to express their ideas and convey information. There arem any kinds of children’s writing, from poetry to novels. But this thesis focuses on stories written by 10-year-old children and analyses the messages delivered by them through their books. My inspiration comes from Indonesian magazines and newspapers that provide creative spaces for children to publish their stories or poems and how these spaces provide possibilities for children to develop their writing ability. The thesis aims to understand children’s writing (particularly of short stories) ways of representing children and childhood, and what messages are delivered in children’s writing. The aim contributes to the image of children and childhood, and the specific form of child culture that are produced in the stories becomes a method of delivering moral messages to children. The data used for the study are two books of short stories, in Indonesian, written by 10-year-old children: Permen-permen Cinta Untukmu / Love Candies for You contains 25 stories and Si Hati Putih / The White Heart has 12 stories. The child writers write stories about the day to day experiences of children that can reveal significant information that is relevant to their lives. The present study is a qualitative one that follows an inductive approach. Symbolic interactionism is used as a theoretical framework with an interpretivist epistemological stance. The data shows different themes of illustration of realities and characters’ experiences. Thematic narrative analysis is applied to analyse common themes (patterns) in the stories, in order to find the messages delivered in the stories and focus on what stories are. The final conclusion is that the stories in both books aim to motivate and inspire other children to value positive behaviour and relationships with others. Morality becomes focus on the stories, family and friends become important aspects in childhood, and adults act as role model.
