Det samlande och bevarande konstmuseet : En studie av tre komplexa konstverk på Malmö Konstmuseum

Abstract

This study is about the collecting and preservation of complex works of art. By using the concepts Historiography, Canon and Social Representation three different types of artworks has been investigated. The study shows that the collecting of contemporary art can be an important tool to highlight and problematize the traditional collecting at museums. Collecting art can activate ethical and moral questions about time, place and social environment. The study further shows that the materiality of the work of art can affect the artist and canon, since an artwork made by an unstable and sensitive material deteriorate quicker and therefore needs greater resources regarding documentation. This is essential especially during the first years of the artworks lifespan and when acquired for a collection. The study also shows great challenges regarding the preservation of complex artworks and that reconsiderations of already accepted preservation strategies might be needed by museum professionals.
