Abstract

Sterben, Tod und Trauer sind keine substanziellen Leiberfahrungen oder anthropologisch vordefinierten Verhaltensmechanismen. Tatsächlich handelt es sich um Wissensbestände und darauf bezogene Praktiken, die als bloß vermeintliche ›Natur des Menschen‹ verinnerlicht werden. Das Ende des Lebens ist weit mehr als der biologisch-reduktionistisch interpretierte Abschluss der Funktionstüchtigkeit des menschlichen Körpers. Die entscheidenden Prozesse sind nicht unabhängig von Sinnsetzungen und Aushandlungen. Vielmehr muss das gesellschaftlich so verstandene Lebensende als je vorläufiges Ergebnis einer epistemologischen Debatte angesehen werden, die sich permanent im Wandel befindet. Was könnte Wissen über den Tod also anderes sein als das Resultat einer kulturabhängigen Standortbestimmung?
