Abstract

ABSTRACT Degradation of tropical ecosystems due to Small-Scale and Artisanal Gold Mining (ASM) activities, generating mercury contamination, which suggests a threat to human and environmental health. This study evaluated the mercury (HgT) content in environmental matrices (water, sediment), as well as the Translocation Factors (TF) and bioconcentration factors (BCF) in plant tissues (aerial/stem and submerged/root biomass). that grow in pools abandoned by gold mining. The HgT analysis was performed using a Direct Mercury Analyzer (LUMEX RA-915+) with PYRO-915+ module, which disintegrates the sample by pyrolysis at 800 °C, the resulting vaporized HgT is detected by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Once the HgT values were known, the FT and FBC were estimated. The average HgT concentration in plant tissues was 116.9±10.56 (ranges 6.67-482.1 µg/kg); in sediment 176.1±31.88 µg/kg (1143-41.59 µg/kg); in water 81.67 (5-120 ng/L). The highest HgT values were detected in Arundinella berteroniana (248±56 µg/kg) and the lowest in Arthraxon hispidus (68.03±1.04 µg/kg). The submerged biomass registered the highest contractions 159±15.51 µg/kg, while the aerial biomass showed the lowest HgT values 73.17±11.72 µg/kg. In general, Eleocharis quadrangulata, Eleocharis interstincta, Tonina fluviatilis, Homolepis aturensis, Arundinella berteroniana and Arthraxon hispidus presented BCF >1, but poor FT removal 1, Arthraxon hispidus registered a TF <1, but in the aerial biomass it presented a FBC of 0, suggesting that this species does not observe the metal through the aerial organs if not that they are absorbed through their roots. The studied species suggest to be interesting candidates to remedy tropical ecosystems impacted by ASM.
