У статті з історичної точки зору досліджено екологічні наслідки створення системи полезахисних лісових смуг та гідромеліоративних робіт на території України відповідно до «Великого плану перетворення природи». Висвітлюється державна політика, спрямована на створення закінченої системи захисних лісонасаджень. Показано шкідливі наслідки пилових бурь, завдані сільськогосподарським угіддям у повоєнний період. Констатовано, що якість виконання робіт по зрошенню та осушенню земель була незадовільною, що зрештою призвело до цілого ряду проблем: затоплення родючих земель, переформування берегів. Встановлено причини невиконання планів протиерозійних робіт. У статті відзначено і той факт, що трансформація річкових систем під впливом господарської діяльності змінювала природні процеси формування якості води джерел зрошення. Доведено, що «Великий план перетворення природи» та його практичне виконання мали суттєві недоліки, викликані, головним чином, недостатнім урахуванням і розумінням особливостей степових екосистем. In the article the impact of creating a system of forest shelter belts and hydrotechnical works on the territory of Ukraine according to “The Great Plan to Transform Nature” on the environment is studied from a historical point of view. The state policy aimed at creating of complete system of protective forests is highlighted. Harmful effects of dust storms caused to agricultural lands in the postwar period are shown. It is stated that the quality of works on irrigation and drainage of lands has been poor and ultimately has led to a number of problems, such as: flooding of fertile lands, rebuilding of banks. The causes of the failure to plan anti-erosion works are determined. In the article the fact that river systems transformation under the influence of economic activities changed natural processes of the formation of water quality of irrigation sources is also noted. It is proved that “The Great Plan to Transform Nature” and its practical implementation have had significant shortcomings, caused mainly by inadequate accounting and understanding of steppe ecosystems
