Attitude Markers of EFL Male and Female Writers in The Discussion Sections of The Research Articles

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti adanya perbedaan antara penulis EFL laki-laki dan penulis perempuan dalam menggunakan attitude markers pada bagian pembahasan di artikel penelitian. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini menggunakan analisis isi kualitatif untuk menganalisis kata, kalimat dan frase yang menunjukkan adanya attitude markers pada dua puluh artikel penelitian oleh penulis EFL laki-laki dan perempuan. Artikel-artikel tersebut dikumpulkan dari empat forum EFL Bahasa Inggris yaitu: EFL Forum, Asia ESP, Asia TEFL, dan TESOL. penulis menganalisis data dengan menggunakan Savka (2009) attitude markers model dan hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa penulis perempuan menggunakan attitude markers lebih banyak dari pada penulis laki-laki.. Yang berarti, perempuan lebih menggunakan peraturan penulisan Grammar daripada penulis laki-laki. Hasil lainnya, penulis perempuan ditemukan lebih banyak menggunakan Disjunct dalam didalam menulis yang berarti perempuan lebih dominan mengklarifikasi dan menjelaskan informasi dalam teks. Namun, penulis laki-laki ditemukan lebih dominan menggunakan adjective as subjective complement with it dan modal verbs yang berarti penulis laki-laki lebih menjelaskan topik dan juga mengungkapkan keinginan di dalam menulis. This study aimed to investigate the differences between EFL male and female writers in using attitude markers in discussion sections of research articles. To achieve the purpose, the study used qualitative content analysis to analyze the words, sentences and phrases that indicate as attitude markers in twenty research articles by EFL male and female writers. The articles were gathered from four EFL English forum regarding EFL Forum, Asian ESP, Asia TEFL, and TESOL. The data were analyzed using Savka (2009) model of attitude markers and the result shows that female writers use attitude marker more than male writers. That means, females use more grammatical feature than males. The other result, female writers were dominantly used disjunct in writing that means female clarify and explain more the information in the text. However, male writers were dominantly used adjective as subjective complement with it and modal verb that means male writers describe more a topic and also expressing the obligation in writing proses.
