The article elucidates the artistic peculiarities of the fables of the Russian writer L.N. Tolstoy. In this investigation, the causes of the great Russian prose writer#39;s address to the fable species are revealed; an analysis of the style and language is made, the theme addressed and the reasons found in the author#39;s fables are described. It is confirmed that the addressing of the Russian classic to this species was determined by Tolstoy#39;s concern for the education of future generations. In comparison with other fables of Russian writers, the originality of Tolstoy the fabulist is nuanced.
