Anquiloglossia ou inserções atípicas do freio lingual: consequências e soluções terapêuticas

Abstract

Introduction: Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly of embryonic origin that restricts language mobility. It can lead to difficulties in breastfeeding, speech impediments, and different swallowing, chewing, and breathing patterns. The treatment of choice is frenotomy. Aims: To define ankyloglossia and its potential impact on a newborn's life, as well as the indications for surgical treatment and its effectiveness. Materials and Methods: Search on Pubmed and ScienceDirect platforms with articles between 2000 and 2023. 425 articles were found. After exclusion of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, 326 articles were excluded. Of the remaining 99 articles, 70 articles were excluded for title, abstracts, and duplicates. 16 articles were excluded for not addressing the topic. Then 13 articles were selected for the study. Results: The totality of the articles confirm the relationship of ankyloglossia in the development of the stomatognathic system. The studies that studied frenotomy confirm that it is a safe and effective treatment. Discussion: There are classifications to diagnose the abnormality of a lingual frenulum. It can cause changes in the development of the facial muscles and thus cause OSAS, problems in occlusion/phonation or prevents keeping the breast in the mouth. Frenotomy is a simple treatment that can be done with a scalpel and laser. Frenectomy is a more invasive treatment. Conclusion: The lingual frenum, when it interferes with breastfeeding or speech, should be surgically intervened.
