Abstract

А. А. Some arguments of Vsevolod Ladov that hierarchical theories of language, for example, Rus-sell’s theory of types, contain a number of shortcomings, are analyzed. These shortcomings are related to ways of solving logical paradoxes. Ladov’s ideas on how to overcome these shortcomings with the help of Wittgenstein’s criticism in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus are considered. Ladov’s state-ment that Wittgenstein’s pictorial theory of symbolism is a radical version of the theory of types is criticized. It is argued that the pictorial theory is based on logical grammar, while the theory of types is based on semantics. This serves as a basis for doubts about the adequacy of the approach proposed by Ladov.
