Abstract

Le marché du caoutchouc est en extension. À 4,2%, la croissance de la consommation en 2004, portée par la consommation de caoutchouc synthétique (+ 5,5%) bien davantage que par celle du caoutchouc naturel (+ 2,3%) devrait se renforcer en 2005 pour atteindre près de 5% et dépasser les 21 millions de tonnes, en hausse de 1 million de tonnes. En dépit d'un accroissement de la consommation ininterrompue depuis maintenant quatre ans, les cours du caoutchouc naturel sont restés stables durant l'année 2004, sous l'étiage de 580 cents malais le kilo-gramme sur le marché à terme de Kuala Lumpur, pour le SMR CV, 550 cents malais le kilogramme pour le SMR L et 490 pour le SMR 20. Des prix stationnaires signalent-ils qu'une certaine auto-régulation du marché est enfin à l'oeuvre? Ou annoncent-ils, comme le craignent certains analystes, qu'une pression à la baisse est imminente, simplement retardée par l'accumulation de stocks depuis deux ans? La sensibilité du marché à la vigueur des économies émergentes, que rien ne semble démentir, pourrait prolonger un état stationnaire que les accords passés de feu l'INRO ont eu tant de mal à entretenir.
