Traditionnellement ancrée dans l'histoire et la culture en Israël, la datte n'a été cultivée pour l'exportation que depuis le début des années 2000, grâce aux nouvelles technologies permettant la mise à disposition d'eau agricole. Malgré des coûts de production élevés, c'est l'arrivée d'une variété à haute valeur ajoutée, la Medjoul, qui a permis à Israël de développer sa production et de se positionner en tant que principal fournisseur de datte de l'Europe sur le segment haut de gamme, devant les États-Unis. Les exportations de Medjoul continuent de fortement se développer dans un contexte de plus en plus concurrentiel.
