La domestication des ignames (Dioscorea Cayenensis-rotundata) chez l'ethnie Bariba du Bénin

Abstract

Un travail d'enquête a été conduit, en 1995, chez 150 paysans de l'ethnie Bariba du Bénin afin d'éclairer l'itinéraire suivie pour obtenir des ignames D. cayenensis-rotundata en partant des ignames sauvages D. abyssinica. Il apparaît que près de la moitié de la population interrogée connaît cette domestication pratiquée aujourd'hui par 4,7 % des paysans faisant partie de l'échantillon étudié. La domestication s'exerce sur une fraction bien délimitée dans les ignames sauvages. C'est une gestion du matériel végétal permettant de revenir périodiquement à la sexualité alors que les ignames cultivées sont essentiellement multipliées par voie végétative. La première étape est l'ennoblissement du tubercule celui-ci se trouvant doté d'une expression morphologique appropriée à l'agriculture. La transformation reste stable aussi longtemps qu'elle est maintenue dans des conditions d'agriculture. La seconde étape de la domestication est une sélection clonale opérée sur le matériel végétal dont le tubercule a été ennobli. Elle fournit, le plus souvent, des cultivars fortement semblables à ceux déjà existants dans l'agriculture mais elle est aussi à l'origine d'innovations variétales. A court terme, c'est une diversification intravariétale adaptative. Sur le long terme, cette sélection a problablement une dimension évolutive
