Abstract

La croissance des N'Dama dans les conditions écologiques du Sénégal, est lente ; les boeufs ne sont " faits " qu'à cinq ans, les femelles à trois ans, et le développement complet n'est atteint respectivement qu'à sept et six ans. La croissance est irrégulière et présente des périodes favorables (mois de novembre, décembre, janvier) et défavorables (d'avril à août). La phase la plus critique se situe entre huit et vingt mois ; les animaux stagnent entre 100 et 150 kg, maigrissent ou meurent ; l'influence sur le croit, de l'abondance et de la valeur nutritive de l'herbe est déterminante. Il semble prudent de ne dresser les boeufs de trait qu'à cinq ans et il est indispensable de le faire à l'époque favorable, c'est-à-dire novembre. Les qualités intrinsèques des animaux ne semblent pas mises en valeur, du fait de la pénurie de ressources fourragères. Un de nos éminents spécialistes zootechniciens qui en fit expérimentalement la preuve met l'accent sur le déficit nutritionnel eu égard à. la valeur des animaux par cette boutade : " Le pays a des animaux qu'il ne mérite pas ".
