Reduction of Perceived Environmental Noise: An active noise cancellation approach

Abstract

With the size of processors getting smaller, the areas in which they can be implemented have increased. In industries where workers are exposed to high levels of noise, passive ear protection is essential but often insufficient. In this project, a solution was proposed to make it possible to attenuate the unwanted noise in a noise-filled environment. This was done using the FxNLMS algorithm, calculating the needed filter coefficients for an adaptive filter implemented on a dsPIC33CH512MP508. A prototype model was constructed as an analogue to headphones to test the algorithm. The model consisted of using two microphones, two speakers, an amplifier, a soundcard, a noise source and PVC tube. However, implementation had trouble with the processor's compiler, leading to assembly development. This made the implementation significantly more time-consuming. Other than this the hardware of the board was lacking as a new 12-bit R-2R DAC had to be made as well as a bias stage for the ADC. However, many parts of the algorithm ended up working and a lot was learned in areas such as digital filters and working with fixed point architecture.
