По звуку и по смыслу (Осмысление звучащего слова в культуре народного протестантизма)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the role of sounding word in the immediate religious life of Russian confessional groups and in their cultural self-consciousness. The confessional texts of Molokans and Dukhobors became the material. It is shown that the dominance of the auditory component in these cultures is linked with the opposition “inside - outside”, “true - not true”. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the Molokan rule “due to the sound / tone and due to the meaning” followed in Molokan worship and Molokan psalms. In the worship this rule is implemented jointly with Molokan credo “due to spirit and due to mind” and expresses the idea of semantic and corresponding to it audio relations (i. e. emotional tone) of the topic of worship and all the sounding texts of the sermons and psalms. When selecting the psalms (biblical texts from various books of the Bible for singing), the rule of topic unity is followed. It sometimes makes fragments of different parts of the biblical Psalms (from the Psalter) and even from different books of the Bible be jointed into one psalm. Choice of the right fragment is made “due to the sound and meaning”, where the sound is understood as the internal sense of the sound of the text. The language game and folk etymology are considered, which are constructed also “due to the sound and meaning” and express the important elements of religious worldview. Pavel Florensky’s assumption that the main difference in the aspirations of Catholicism and Protestantism comes down to the difference of psychological types - visual and auditory - is given. If one accepts it, the conventionally-used phrase in the scientific literature Russian Protestantism will get more solid foundation
