Abstract

The subject of research is the post-traumatic stress and coping behavior in the elderly age. It is noted that there are different points of view on coping behavior and specific features of traumatizing in the elderly age, therefore it is important to the authors to study the relation between signs of post-traumatic stress and coping strategies among people older than 60 years. In the study conducted by the authors 76 respondents took part: 19 men (med = 70,8 years) and 57 women (med = 69 years), 69.5 years being the sample average age. The respondents were interviewed in the period from 2010 to 2012 inclusive. The study monitored the socio-demographic variables - sex and age of the respondents. The level of education, profession, social and economic status were not considered. It is shown that elderly people with high level of post-traumatic stress demonstrate the trend of emotion-oriented coping (EOC) rising indicators, in this case the link with the EOC indicators of psychopathology becomes strengthened. In the case of low level of post-traumatic stress the higher indicators of task-oriented (TOC) and emotionally oriented coping are observed, and also there is no link between the EOC and psychopathology
