SUMMARY The occurrence of periapical pathology is a discussed issue in the literature. The aim of this study is to carry out a survey of the prevalence of periapical cist, granuloma and abscess that occurred at the Bucal Pathology Lab of the Faculdade de Odontologia da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul during the years of 1973, 1983, 1993 and 2003, by analyzing those pathologies occurrences in accordance to age, sex and anatomical location. For this purpose, data was collected from the patient biopsy records. This data was later inserted in the Access® (Microsoft Corp.) program and statistically analyzed. It was pointed out that, among a total of 119 biopsies evaluated, the periapical lesion – the cist – (55.5%) was prevalent and that 1993 was the year of the highest level of prevalence (61 lesions). The female patients (68.1%) showed the highest level of lesions and the second decade of life (26%) showed the highest level of periapical pathologies. The most affected oral region was the anterior maxillary with more than 32% of the perceived lesions and there is an important association between periapical abscess in the maxilla and periapical granuloma in the mandible. UNITERMS: epidemiology; radicular cyst; periapical granuloma; periapical abscess.
