Mortalidade e esquizofrenia

Abstract

Resumo Pacientes com esquizofrenia apresentam taxas elevadas de mortalidade e significativa redução da expectativa de vida, quando comparados com a população em geral, tanto em decorrência de mortes por causas naturais quanto por não-naturais. Esse dado mantém-se apesar dos avanços no diagnóstico, novos tratamentos e humanização do cuidado aos pacientes. Entre as causas naturais, destacam-se as mortes por doenças cardiovasculares. São diversos os fatores que contribuem para tal fenômeno, alguns relacionados aos sintomas do transtorno, outros a complicações dos tratamentos e outros ainda ao estilo de vida e hábitos dos pacientes. Existe também importante prejuí­zo na prevenção de doenças clí­nicas de todos os tipos, bem como no tratamento das já instaladas, nos pacientes com esquizofrenia, em razão do estigma que cerca o transtorno. Dentre as causas de morte não-naturais, o suicí­dio é a mais importante delas, mas também há maiores taxas de óbitos por acidentes e homicí­dios. Examinar os fatores associados ao excesso de mortalidade nessa população de pacientes é fundamental, já que estratégias para reduzi-la dependem dessa compreensão mais adequada do fenômeno.Descritores: Esquizofrenia, Mortalidade, Agentes antipsicóticos, Doenças cardiovasculares, Diabetes mellitus, Estereotipagem, Sí­ndrome X metabólica
