RARITY CRITERIA FOR PERIODICALS: newspapers, magazines and scientific periodicals in the Rare Books Section of the Central Library (BCE) of the University of Brasília (UnB)

Abstract

As the works dealing with rarity in periodicals are scarce, this study sought to understand what are the rarity criteria for serials adopted by other institutions, which bibliographic elements for attributing rarity to books can be used in the context of periodicals and which historical elements and specific materials from production and circulation of serials publications bring scarcity and importance to titles and copies. For this, an exploratory, documentary and bibliographical research was carried out, in the literature on bibliographic rarity, in the history of production and circulation of periodials and in the criteria adopted by Brazilian institutions. From this survey, the rarity criteria for periodicals for the Central Library of the University of Brasília presented in this article were proposed.
