REGIONAL EVAPOTRANSPIRATION USING SEBAL IN FLAT AND MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN CONDITIONS

Abstract

SEBAL - “Surface Energy Balances Algorithms for Land” - is an algorithm to create evapotranspiration maps for large areas. SEBAL is processed through computational steps to predict total solar radiation and energy balance on the earth surface. It uses images collected by TM Landsat sensor or any other sensor that collects wavelengths in the region of the reflective infrared and thermal bands. This study was done to estimate the components of the solar radiation balance and the surface energy (sensible heat flux; soil heat flux and latent heat flux), to determine the instantaneous (hourly) evapotranspiration in the area of interest through the use of SEBAL, in addition to the remote sensing tools for imaging of flat and mountainous terrain. For the region of study, Landsat 5 scene was used for the days 20/06/2003 and 24/09/2003.
