Abstract

= This article reveals theoretical aspects of functioning of Russian and Belarusian fantasy literature. The process of building up literary views on this subject is analyzed. Scientific works are grouped according to the degree of importance in the development of fantasy. Main factors that determined the inferior status of Belarusian fantasy to the Russian literature in the mid-20th century are specified in the analysis of the state of Belarusian fantasy studies. Peculiarities of the approaches of literary critics in the interpretation of the category of fantastic are identified; general tendencies of studying fantasy in both the literatures are outlined. Borders of understanding of the fantastic in Belarusian criticism are investigated; main errors of literary critics are specified. Qualitative changes are marked in the development of Belarusian fantasy in recent years that form the original field of literature. Belarusian fantasy considerably differs from Russian by the alloy of philosophical tendencies of the late XX century and “classical” models of the art worlds of au-thors of the early XX century, being a special variant of “unreal” prose.
