Abstract

The paper describes the ethnic-language structure of the population of Kharkiv according to the statistical data of the All-Ukrainian Population Census of 2001. The absolute majority of the population of the city was Ukrainians. Representatives of ethnic minorities settled in Kharkiv dispersedly, the largest among them were Russians. The peculiarities of the linguistic structure of both Ukrainians and ethnic minorities are determined. Despite the fact that the Russians were in a minority, the overwhelming majority among the all population of Kharkiv was Russian -speaking population, due to the inertial effects of the ethno-language processes of the period without state in Ukraine.
