Abstract

The paper focuses on the usage of the words denoting a horse in the English fiction of 18 th 20 th centuries. Adjectival and verbal word-combinations which contain the components of the semantic field “horse” are described in the paper. The author unites these word-combinations into different thematic groups. The analysis of the usage of adjectival word-combinations in fiction makes it possible to determine the qualities and functions of a horse that are of primary importance for the British, various kinds of horse states, the most frequent horse breeds in Great Britain. The word-combinations of horse coloration comprise not only colour names, but also specific words used to describe only horses and word-combinations that are formed on a metaphoric basis. The author points out that the verbal word-combinations containing the components of the semantic field “horse” show both the attitude of a person to a horse and the actions done with this animal. A large number of words denoting a horse, synonyms among adjectival and verbal word-combinations, varieties of contexts in which they are used prove that a horse has always been significant in the life of the British.
