Abstract

St. Petersburg State University, 7-9, Universitetskaya nab., St. Petersburg, 199034, Russian FederationThis article examines the main aspects of interaction between municipal candidates and residents ofKanonersky island in St. Petersburg. The study was conducted between the summer and autumn of2014, during the the pre-election campaign for municipal offices. The author seizes the period of activepolitical struggle between the more rigid ‘system’ authorities and more active ‘non-system’ opposition.Political communication is considered from a relational perspective that helps to identify cultural as-pects of interaction. Using the works of the relational sociologist A. Mische, we highlight a number ofconversational mechanisms which were used by opponents during the political competition. Findingsare based on qualitative analysis of interviews, social networks and observations obtained in the courseof empirical research. Refs 9. Figs 2.
