«The Soldier's Dream»

Abstract

The article presents the analysis of Thomas Campbell's poem «The Soldier's Dream» (1804) understanding in the Russian literature of the XIX XX centuries. It is noted that a variation on the theme from Campbell «Son ratnika», created by I.I. Kozlov in 1827, was the first fact of the Russian literature address to the creative work of the English poet-painter of the battle pieces, it carried events, lacking any concrete place and time of action, into the Russian reality. The outline of the original was used to show the senses and spirits of the Russian soldier, who felt nostalgia, realized the danger and at the same time understood the necessity of the soldier's duty. In 1901 A.P. Koltonovskiy created a poem «Son soldata» on «the plot from Campbell», in which, however, he didn't reach any considerable originality; in 1942 Yu.D. Levin got interested in the English author's literary work, which reflected his own feelings during the war, and made a translation close to the original. The comparison of «The Soldier's Dream» interpretations, given in the article, allows us to determine the tendencies of the Russian poetic translation evolution in the XIX at the first half of the XX century.
