Abstract

This article focuses on one of the most outstanding personalities in the history of Russian theology Archpriest Gerasim Petrovich Pavsky, graduate and professor of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, the famous linguist and scholar. Despite the prominence of Archpriest Gerasim, his biblicaltheological works and methods have not been fully included in the general history of Russian theology. The author highlights the most important moments of life’s journey Archpriest Gerasim Pavsky, including the famous «case of the transfer», but the main focus of research focuses on identifying principles Archpriest Gerasim. A characteristic feature of the article is to consider the scientific activity Pavsky, on the one hand, in the church and the ecclesiastical and academic context of his time, on the other in the perspective of further development of Russian theology. The author concludes that the Archpriest Gerasim Pavsky was characteristic fruit of a new ecclesiastical-educational concepts implemented in Russia at the beginning of the XIX century, with its pluses and minuses. Realizing the appeal to the creative development of theology, Pavskiy few ahead of his time and his contemporaries almost half a century. But, stepping quickly, he has made mistakes that Russian scholars do in the future for several decades, introducing the historical method in his research, faulting, correcting and adjusting its scientific approaches. To assess the theological methods Pavsky author introduces the concept of «sacred historicism», the lack of which, according to the author, and Archpriest Gerasim led to some paradoxical results.
