Abstract

The article deals with the data of a psycholinguistic experiment with English-speaking Americans on stereotypical role expectations about the politician as a role. A special attention is paid to the evaluation component of the knowledge that respondents have. On the basis of the results obtained in the experiment a model of sociocultural knowledge about the ideal, the anti-ideal and the status quo in performing the role was created. This model is further applied to discourse analysis of the communicative strategies that are used by the readers of Washington Post and New York Times in their comments to the articles on actual problems of domestic and foreign policy. This reveals a close interrelatedness between mental representations of values and mental representations of social roles that determine some aspects of verbal communica tion.
