Abstract

The study of this article are German nicknames. Since the interests of any science require a clear, complete, unambiguous definition of the subject, the article will consider the place of nicknames in onomastic system, namely, to what category it belongs (common noun or a proper name), and what is included in its category. There is debate among scientists about whether to include in its category hypocoristics names and baby teasers, appraisive appellative, as well as informal toponyms and ethnonyms
