Abstract

The paper gives the linguistic analysis of character of Catherine the Great in B. Akunin’s historical novel "Extracurricular reading”. According to the concept of describing the person’s character, which takes place in Kirov linguists’ papers, the Emperess’ character is represented as unity of procedural and non-procedural characteristics. This concept allows to analyze the character of Catherine the Great as an active person and describe her appearance and temper. On the basis of investigation’s materials we make conclusions about the way Akunin creates the character of the ruler. Analysis of the novel’s text shows, that the author represents Catherine the Great in a realistic manner, exaggerates her negative featuresin some cases. The peculiarity of the novel is the fact that Akunin tries to show not only a monarch, but a woman.
