Abstract

Early diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy, which is one of the most frequent complications of diabetes mellitus, nowadays is related to significant difficulties. Corneal confocal microscopy allows visualizing nerve fiber damage in patients with diabetic polyneuropathy because in the cornea, nerve endings density is the highest in all human body. This method makes possible revealing the earliest signs of diabetic polyneuropathy. In some studies, a correlation between the damage of peripheral and corneal nerves in diabetic patients was shown. Corneal confocal microscopy could become an alternative to existing invasive examination methods.
