Abstract

In this article the phenomenon of the modern rural areas is regarded from the socio-cultural point of view. Distinction of such notions as "village", "the country", "settlement" is made. Modern peasantry is analysed as a social class, having inherited traditions of its predecessors in the epoch when Russia was an agricultural power. The author pays close attention at the results of the reforms carried out in the 90s of the XX century and shows the correlation of social traditions and social innovations in the cultural memory of the farmers.
