Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine involvement of adrenergic and cholinergic mechanisms in duodenal responses to exogenous serotonin. Experiments were performed on 80 Wistar rats under general anesthesia, mechanical ventilation, bilateral vagotomy and transection of both glossopharyngeal nerves. Duodenal mechanical activity was recorded during serotonin adipinate infusion to intact animals and on the background of the ongoing actions of cholinergic and adrenergic antagonists. The blockade of adrenergic and cholinergic receptors did not prevent, but on the contrary, amplified excitatory effect on serotonin. β-Adrenergic receptors blockade increased the intensity of observed reactions more than for 100%. We concluded that both adrenergic and cholinergic mechanisms provide an inhibitory pattern on serotonin-reactive structures that manage motor function of the duodenum.
