Abstract

The article discusses the development of the hard coal mining sector in socialist Poland on the example of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Considers the concentration process of the hard coal industry within the Katowice voivodship, accompanied by the increased influence of local elites at the national level. Main attention is paid to the internal politics of the E. Gierek the head of state in 70th of the twentieth century and representative of the silesian’s local elites. Estimates the role of the Gierek’s policy for the development of the hard coal mining sector. Based on the statistics of hard coal mining and urban population in the major mining area analyzes the main stages of development of the sector, including the market transition of the Polish economy.
