Abstract

The stereotyped ideas assigned to ritual practices are significant components of the traditional world image. Depending on their function in this or that rite, these ideas can have an ethnic complexion. In the article the evolution of the markers of this kind in the wedding rites of Russians and the Mari people in Volga-Vyatka Region is considered. The author compares the ritual actions and texts of preand post-interim periods of the wedding rite of the given ethnic groups. These actions and rites were collected and described in the ethnographic accounts from the end of the 18th century to a third of the 20th century and also during the folklore and ethnographic expeditions of MariStateUniversity in the latter half of the 20th century. Further the author discovers a number of common traditional actions and formulas.
