Abstract

Activity of trypsin-like enzymes, α2-macroglobulin (α2M) and α1-proteinase inhibitor (α1PI) with a sharp proteinase-inhibitor imbalance were found in the ascitic fluid (AF) in ovarian cancer (OC, n=26 – cystadenocarcinoma, T3-4N0M0) and tuberculosis of the uterine appendages (TUA, n=11), in comparison with the blood. In TUA, only plasminogen and plasmin with significant activation had a normal balance, while quantity of endogenous inhibitors was insufficient. High content of α2M and α1PI in AF in OC could be the result of ingress of proteins with modified characteristics from the tumor which prevented control of proteolysis. In OC, depletion and imbalance of kallikrein-kinin system (KKS) and fibrinolytic system (FS), even with a greater quantity of inhibitors, excluded protective and adaptive functions of KKS and FS making them damaging factors contributing to the malignant process spread.
