Abstract

In this article a number of issues concerning the ability of sounds and their combinations to have meanings are considered. These issues include the questions of whether sounds and their combinations can have certain inherent semantic values beside their purely phonetic features; whether the notion of universals can be applied to sounds of speech (or the peculiarities of their pronunciation must be regarded as distinctive characteristics of certain groups of people, or speech communities), that is whether the application of the notion of normativeness, which implies the existence of a normalized set of universal meanings, to the phonological system of a particular language.
