Abstract

In this article the term «code» is understood in R. Bart's treatment as associative fields, or the supertext organisation of values. «The picturesque» is considered as such code, an element of national mentality and an aesthetic category. Formation of the named a code in landscape painting and landscape art of 18 century, its development and functioning in aestheticism movement on a boundary of 19-20 centuries and transformation in the postmodernist novel where picturesque becomes a necessary component of a national code («englishness») is traced.
