Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of early unknown description of The Olonets Governorate of the end of XVIII century, which in the 1784-1796 was administratively the Olonets Viceroyalty. Particular attention is paid to the identification of the manuscript’s author. The text contains detailed comments and judgments on various aspects, which are stated in the parts on salt production, mining of pearls and minerals on the territory of Karelia. The section in which the status of the Russian-Swedish border at the end of the XVIII century is shown and the project to strengthen it by creating new customs checkpoints is presented is extremely important. The relevance of the research is that the document is important for the study of economic and political life of the region during the period of Olonets Viceroyalty. Despite the existence of the name on the title page of the archive manuscript its author remained unknown as could not be identified with any of similar names known in the Russian science. On the basis of archival sources the article reveals that the author is a senior administration official of the Olonets Viceroyalty Attorney Wilhelm von Tiesenhausen. The archeographical and paleographic characteristic of multi-page document written in German in neo-Gothic italics is given.
