Abstract

The article looks into the highly relevant issues of contact linguistics, which is a currently popular branch of language studies. Despite a considerable bulk of research in contact linguistics, certain inconsistencies in its terminology can still be pointed out. Hence the authors’ attempt to elucidate and systematize the phenomena studied by contact linguistics bilingualism, code-switching, borrowings and morphosyntactic interference. The article also provides an overview of modern approaches to studying language contacts, and singles out the reasons for employing various codes within a single communicative act, which can involve either bilingual or monolingual interlocutors.
